The history and origin of the Mid-Autumn Festival
The Mid-Autumn Festival has thousands of years of history, with the earliest form of moon appreciation dating back more than 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty (1045 BC – 221 BC). Ancient Chinese emperors would worship the moon every Mid-Autumn Festival in the belief that there would be a good harvest in the coming year. After seeing the emperor worshiping the moon every year, this custom became popular among the people and continued to develop over time. During the Tang Dynasty (618 AD - 907 AD), the upper classes would hold large gatherings and then gather in droves to admire the moon.
Although the Chinese have records of worshiping and appreciating the moon as early as 1047 B.C., the Mid-Autumn Festival would have to wait another 1,700 years, during the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1279 A.D.). Worshiping the moon has been a tradition since recorded history.
Chang'e flies to the moon
The core legend of the Mid-Autumn Festival is Chang'e flying to the moon. There are many versions of this story, but we will only tell one, which covers the many versions of this famous legend. Chang'e is the Chinese moon goddess. Legend has it that she secretly drank her husband's elixir, escaped, and floated to the moon, where she spent eternity. Her husband is said to have been devastated by her death and has dedicated sacrifices to his wife there every August 15th ever since. Soon after, others also learned about the ritual and began making sacrifices to Chang'e, cementing the Chinese tradition of worshiping Chang'e and the moon every year.
Mid-Autumn Festival traditional customs
One of the most common Mid-Autumn Festival traditions is worshiping the moon, which is especially popular among the older generation. In Chinese culture, the moon symbolizes reunion, so people have a tradition of celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival with a big meal with family and friends. For those who cannot reunite with their relatives and friends during the festival, they will send celebratory messages to their loved ones to express their longing for their loved ones.
